Body Positivity: Empowering Healthy Habits for Plus Size Women

Body Positivity was originally conceived in the 1970s to challenge the notion that only thin, white, and straight women were exclusively beautiful. It was actually created for fat, queer, black women to celebrate their bodies. But now, 50 years later, body positivity has evolved to encompass a broader demographic. Essentially, white women (including me) took this from its original intent. In today's world, body positivity is gaining recognition as a mainstream trend. It emphasizes the importance of loving and appreciating your body, exactly as it is, without any conditions or exceptions. After this paragraph, I will not use the term body positivity- because it is not for me, a white person. This blog post is dedicated to plus-size women who are seeking to cultivate healthy habits while embracing their bodies with pride and self-love.

Your Body is A Miraculous Gift:

Your body is nothing short of a miracle. It works tirelessly every day, supporting you in all that you do. It deserves your care, respect, and gratitude. One of the most powerful ways to demonstrate your love and support for your body is through intentional and regular movement. Yes, there are multiple ways that you can do this- walking, swimming, dancing, and fitness as you are able. My best tip: pick what you love!

Let's be honest—there may have been times when you took your body for granted or felt guilty for not being active. It's time to shift your mindset. Instead of viewing exercise as an obligation, reframe it as a privilege. When you realize that you get to move your body, you'll discover a newfound desire to do so. Remember, it's all about embracing a positive mindset.

The Far-Reaching Impact of Movement:

Incorporating regular exercise into your life has a profound impact on every aspect of your well-being. From enhancing your physical health to improving your mental and emotional state, the benefits are extensive. The best part is that you don't need to spend hours each week at the gym to reap these rewards. Let's explore some of the incredible benefits that await you:

  1. Improved longevity: Regular exercise lowers the risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers such as colon, breast, lung, and uterine.

  2. Enhanced mental well-being: Movement promotes a better mood, reduces stress and anxiety, and improves overall mental health. It positively influences brain structure and function, leading to improved cognitive abilities.

  3. Stronger body: Engaging in physical activity strengthens your bones and muscles, enhancing your physical resilience and vitality.

  4. Quality sleep: Regular exercise contributes to better sleep, both in terms of quantity and quality. You'll wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

  5. Fulfilling relationships: A healthy and active lifestyle can enhance your sex life, increasing satisfaction and intimacy.

  6. Preventing accidents: Regular exercise helps improve balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls.

  7. Weight management: Engaging in physical activity, combined with a balanced diet, aids in maintaining a healthy weight and overall well-being.

  8. Smoking cessation support: Incorporating exercise into your routine can make quitting smoking easier by reducing cravings and improving your overall health.

Embrace the Love Your Body Deserves:

Your amazing body deserves all these benefits and more. By embracing that amazing body that God gave you and committing to a regular exercise routine, you're not only taking care of your physical health but also empowering yourself mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Remember, you have the power to make positive changes in your life, and it all starts with appreciating and nurturing the body you're in.

As a plus-size woman, cultivating healthy habits and embracing body neutrality are vital for your overall well-being. You have the power to rewrite the narrative surrounding body confidence and create a healthier, more joyful relationship with your body. So, celebrate your body, move it with intention and love, and let the benefits of regular exercise enhance every aspect of your life. Embrace your journey to a healthier and happier you, knowing that you can actually like the body you have.
